Circumstances
On December 1, 1915, at approximately 8:00 p.m., while on duty, Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) John Baker was directing traffic on the Dufferin Street Bridge near the Canadian National Exhibition grounds and Stanley Barracks in Toronto, Ontario.
During the course of his duties, L/Cpl Baker was struck by an automobile and pushed into a steel bridge abutment. The driver of the vehicle, a medical doctor, rendered immediate aid at the scene and transported him to hospital. Despite these efforts, L/Cpl Baker later succumbed to his injuries.
